Friday Five

This post is a shout out both to my wallet (Get ready, yo!) and to Lauren, who earlier in the week lamented her lack of cute winter-weather footwear. Seeing as I wear the same pair of shoes until the soles come flapping off, I too am in need of some new shoes that can hold up to daily trudging to and from the subway. If the weather is inclement, I’ll obviously switch to the super insulated Bean Boots my mom bought me as an early birthday present. Suede is not perhaps the most functional in slushy, wet weather, but if this coming winter is anything like last winter, I won’t have to worry, as it was relatively dry. Here are 5 pairs of cute ankle boots I’m refraining from buying immediately.

1. Sam Edelman “Petty” / 2. Unlisted “Beyond Me” / 3. ASOS “Chelsea” / 4. Madden Girl “Dontee” / 5. Nine West “Sosie”

Okay, so that’s a lie, because I totally bought #2, the Kenneth Cole cognac boots. I can see myself wearing them in Paris (oh, yeah, by the way, I’m already outfit-planning and mentally packing. Congratulations to all of you who get to deal with this neurosis until March) or with sweater dresses in December and January. I’m completely, totally in love with every single pair of those shoes. The Sam Edelman pair have long been on my radar, but I have a logistical question: what kind of socks do you wear with those? Pair #4, the Steve Madden chukkas, remind me of a much pricier J. Crew pair, but are just as cute and can be worn with anything. Lauren: are any of these striking your fancy? Did I totally miss the mark? And everyone else, what do you guys think? Which pair is your favorite? The best part: with the exception of the Sam Edelmans, they’re all under $75.

Friday Five

I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t watched, but the Project Runway season finale last night was FLAWLESS. This was my favorite season so far, it was the most entertaining and had the best designers in my opinion, and I was very happy with the way it all turned out. In fact, the finale was the highlight of my week in television. Lauren, catch up and then we can gab about it.

This week’s Friday Five is a bit of a smörgasbord without a cohesive theme. I only used the word smörgasboard to pop some umlauts into your day. You’re welcome.

Friday Five

Tomorrow marks the official start of fall. Let’s take a moment here to revel in how amazing that is. Gone are the 90 degree sweat-fests, marinating on the subway platform and generally being a major grump because the window of temperatures I find acceptable for living in ranges from 30-75 and not a degree higher. I want to break out my big chunky sweaters and my scarves and boots and leave the windows open to enjoy the crisp, cold air while I sleep. In a fitting turn of events, this year fall ends on my birthday. Happy birthday to me.

I haven’t done a Friday Five in a few weeks, so let’s get back into the swing of things, shall we?

1. Sweater / 2. Bag / 3. Keychains / 4. Ottoman / 5. Paris Prints

Friday Five

You guys, I made it. I survived! Two whole weeks sans Boyfriend, and there were no tears but approximately 400 hours of reality television marathons and more than a few dinners consisting of a bowl of cereal. He arrives tomorrow morning and THANK GOD because this was getting old.

I’m especially happy today is Friday because, for the second time in 2 weeks, I’m playing hooky from work and heading to New York for the day. Only this time, I’m leaving my mom behind (sorry mom!) and meeting up with someone very special and exciting. Can you guess who it is? (Hint: it’s not Gary Oldman, but I’m still jazzed about it nonetheless!). Here are 5 things tickling my fancy this week:

1. Photo / 2. Blanket / 3. Project Runway / 4. Face Wash / 5. Bright Space

Friday Five

The last few mornings have been downright cool, breezy and refreshing. I’m not going to be tricked into thinking that it’s going to be fall weather anytime soon; 26 years of living in Philadelphia has disabused me of the belief that seasons will stick to their prescribed temperatures. Thanksgiving or even New Year’s day can be unseasonably warm. But it hasn’t stopped me from dreaming of unpacking all my fall clothing, seeing all that tweed and plaid and wool again. Breaking in a new pair of oxfords, wearing a scarf with everything. Hot apple cider! Pumpkin picking! Oh my god, I can’t wait. I know that when winter hits and I’m walking to the subway in freezing rain and snow I’ll be singing a different tune, but for now, bring on October.

In the meantime, today’s Friday Five is my dream fall wardrobe.

Friday Five

I’m being a total slacker today and taking off work to have breakfast and hang out with my aunt and Mommom. It’s one of my favorite traditions; we go to the same diner, sit in the same booth, and all order off the $3.99 Specials menu. Don’t let the price fool you, the portions are gigantic and I don’t have to eat again until dinner. There’s also the added bonus of hanging out with my hilarious almost-90 grandmother. She’s a character.

I also want to mention that right now, Gary Oldman is filming a movie in the city. MY city! Only a few blocks from my house! To say that I am in Creepy Stalker Mode would be an understatement. I’m basically inspecting every older male that walks by me, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. That would make my life complete. And also maybe guarantee I end up in jail for assault by hugging.

So yeah, there’s a Gary Oldman reference in today’s Friday Five.

1. “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” / 2. Birdcage / 3. Tunic / 4. “Midnight in Paris” gif / 5. Pillow

To be fair, the version of John Le Carré’s massive spy novel I have doesn’t have Gary Oldman on the cover, but that’s only because Boyfriend bought it. When he gave up on reading it I decided to pick it up (mostly thanks to Lauren’s recommendation), and wow. You know how at the beginning of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” there is a family tree of characters because there are so many with so many strange names? Yeah, that would have been helpful in this book. That’s not to say I’m not enjoying it, because I am (the addition of yet another excuse to think about Gary Oldman will always be welcome), but man, it is dense.

In styling the guest room I briefly considered adding this vintage-y birdcage, but decided it might sway the entire scheme too feminine. Now I’m debating whether or not that’s true. It looks like it will be a pain to keep dust-free, but I don’t know, there’s something (shabby-)chic about it, don’t you think? And speaking of chic, how much do you love that J.Crew chambray tunic dress? It looks like one of those pieces that can be worn year round with the right styling. I’m trying to buy investment pieces rather than clothes than only serve one specific purpose (see: my entire wardrobe for Europe), and that tunic looks like it would fit the bill nicely.

I’ve found perhaps the most useful gif of all time: Hemingway in “Midnight in Paris” saying, “My opinion is I hate it.” I have a collection of gifs that are applicable to lots of different situations (much like this hilarious time-suck) but this one takes the cake. When someone suggests we go for a run? My opinion is I hate it. Having to wake up before 11am? My opinion is I hate it. The whole Chik-fil-A gay marriage stance? My opinion is I hate it.

What I don’t hate at all is that adorable Paris print pillow. Sam, in all her loveliness, was kind enough to see it and immediately think of me. I love being thought of in that way! Isn’t it just the cutest? The bunting flags and the little people in pea coats. Even the little puppy has a big red bow on! Tres adorable, non?

Alright, kiddos, what are you up today? What about this weekend? I have nothing on the agenda except catching up on some Vanity Fair and doing some more investigative creepin’ to find Gary Oldman. Highly important work! Take care and I’ll see you on Monday!

Friday Five, Olympics Edition

Is anyone else as insanely excited about the opening ceremony of the Olympics today as I am? I still remember the 1996 summer Olympics, staying up late glued to the tiny tv in my room and watching as much as I could. And this year they’re being held in one of my favorite cities in the whole world. I’m duly excited because it means that this weekend, while Boyfriend’s mom and I are parked on the couch, we won’t have to default to watching copious amounts of HGTV and can instead tune in to watching all the diving, running, javelin, and gymnastics we can handle. Oh, yeah, there is going to be some major work completed in the room downstairs, too. But not by us.

Naturally, this week’s Friday Five is an Olympic-themed one. I thought it would be a difficult task finding 5 things to fit this theme, but I clearly underestimated the consumer-driven nature that an event of this magnitude inspires.

1. T-shirt / 2. Poster / 3. Necklace / 4. Statue / 5. Dish set

Friday Five

Happy Friday! Is it wrong that I am beyond excited it is pouring rain outside? Not only does it provide a break in the heat (in theory, though if anything the humidity reaches new levels of unbearable when it rains) but I love waking up to that rushing sound and the way the concrete in the city smells during storms. Of course, I’m not the one who has to take the dog out in it, so maybe I don’t get a say.

We’re putting the construction project downstairs on hold for the weekend, but we still have little projects to complete like painting the doors and spackling (oh my god, the spackling). It’s supposed to rain for a good chunk of the weekend so I foresee lots of lounging on the couch and perhaps more HGTV. I know, I’m wild.

Herewith, my 5 favorite things this week.

1. Gary Oldman video / 2. St. Germain / 3. Wedges / 4. Shampoo / 5. Carafes

So yeah, that’s a video of Gary Oldman doing a dramatic reading of R.Kelly’s memoir, “Soulacoaster.” Have I piqued your interest yet?

Friday Five

As I mentioned, our 2nd anniversary was this week. We exchanged gifts the night before, like eager kids on Christmas Eve. I got Boyfriend a subscription to the Sunday New York Times, YSL L’Homme cologne, Art of Shaving Lavender shave cream, and a gift certificate for a professional shave. Boyfriend got me Lush bath bombs, the Club Monaco fedora, a bottle of Bluecoat Gin, and tickets to see Florence + The Machine this fall (if this were Twitter I’d end this sentence with hashtag: spoiled). It should be noted that I am incredibly lucky.

And because I’ve been showered with gifts this week and don’t feel the same itch to buybuybuy, today’s Friday Five has more things I already own than things I want to own. A first, I think!

1. T-Shirt / 2. Tote bag / 3. Bath Bombs / 4. Mariage Frères Tea / 5. Biscoff Cookies

Friday Five

This week was a blur of “Midnight in Paris” and junk food. Pretty standard material for whenever Boyfriend is out of town on business. There’s no one to tell me to eat real food or like, get off the couch. I had a lot of uninterrupted time at home to pull together this week’s Friday Five, and for what I think is only the second or third time since I’ve been doing these, I actually had to pare it down from a longer list of stuff. I love it when that happens. My wallet on the other hand…

Herewith, this week’s Friday Five.

 1. Makeup Brush set / 2. Scarf / 3. Bowl / 4. Lip Gloss / 5. Gary Oldman Video
