The Newsroom

Is anyone else watching (and loving) The Newsroom? This show is just magnificent. The typical Aaron Sorkin dialogue that plays like verbal ping-pong, the character dynamics, all of it. It’s witty and funny and topical, and without giving anything away I was moved to tears at the end of the 4th episode. The Newsroom makes me wish I’d actually used my degree in Journalism in any meaningful way (and, also, that I had paid attention to The West Wing when it was on). And yes, I understand that the show is highly stylized and the odds of me landing a job at a prestigious news show in the biggest media hub in the world were non-existent, but still. I am completely in love with the whole thing. There isn’t a single character who is not charming beyond belief, and if we’re being honest, I love the retroactive ass-kicking Sorkin is giving the Tea Party movement. If you’re not watching yet, do it. Then come back and thank me.

What shows are you into right now?

  1. It looks a little different around here, yes? Sadly, because I love Aaron Sorkin, we don’t get HBO. I would love to watch The Newsroom. I loveloveloved The West Wing. So, come on down and we can snuggle up on the sofa and watch almost all of the seasons, which I have on DVD. You won’t regret it. I have a friend who went to college with Aaron Sorkin, and she has some good stories. I’d tell one, but I can’t remember them. I’ll get her to remind me.

We started Top Chef Masters last night, but switched over in favor of Jimmy Fallon’s Prime Time Music Special, because how could you not? Other than that, it’s all King of the Hill around here. Sigh.

  2. No I haven’t even heard of it! Will have a look out for it although I didn’t watch the west wing either.

We’re desperate for something new to watch. I watched the first episode of revenge and my what a pile of poo that was. Shame as the concept was brilliant.

Please can I come round Lauren’s and snuggle too?

  3. Haven’t a clue what this programme is, sorry!

My fave show at the moment, but it just finished last night is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s search for his next Jesus Christ Superstar. I was gunning all the way for the winner, but rather big headedly, I’m hardly ever wrong about who wins when it comes to these talent shows, ha! Drives Mr. L mad. My poor family have had to endure it every evening for the last 10 days, shit happens hey? x

  4. What a coincidence! The Hubster and I are HUGE fans of The Newsroom!! :D
We just watched the (rather long!) first episode last night and I thoroughly recommend it.

We also really love Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The Brits might be interested to know that it was written by our very own Armando Ianucci. ;)

You have such great taste in TV, though, Erin. I’m so grateful that you introduced me to Homeland and I’m eagerly awaiting it’s return! :D

  5. Ugh, I am watching wayyy too many shows…But I’m always happy to add another to the list! Will have to look for this one.

  6. I did see previews for the show and it looked really good for all the reasons you mention above. Sorkin is just a genius at writing rapid fire, intelligent banter. Sadly, I haven’t had a chance to watch it (yet). With GG on hiatus, I’m actually not watching anything right now. (Oh, except for Bill Maher.) Finally clocking some reading time though, which makes me very happy.

  7. Ok seriously, I really think we would be besties in “real life” (Gary Oldman!)

Husband and I are OBSESSED with Newsroom. That episode your talking about? I cried. Husband cried. Pretty sure the dogs cried. At first, I was a little annoyed at how the women were being portrayed (shrill, over-emotional messes) but it all evened out by episode 3.

Ok, something tells me you will appreciate this:

Enjoy and have an awesome weekend!

  8. we have the first 4 episodes saved but haven’t started watching it yet…what we have done is started watching the west wing again (!!) right from the beginning.
