And Then There Were Walls

Three days, 2 trips to Home Depot, one trip to IKEA, 40 hours of watching HGTV on the couch to stay out of the way, and lots of wrangling Fitz to keep him upstairs, and voila, we have walls. A lot more work went into it than I’m letting on. Friday, holes were drilled in the wall to run electric to the new room, the carpet was ripped up, and the menfolk went to Home Depot to buy 2x4s and sheetrock. Saturday morning we ventured out in the rain to buy the French doors, and all the 2x4s went up. The angled wall on the left took the most time. The doors went up with a lot of struggle, though I wouldn’t know because I spent the weekend napping, watching lots of House Hunters, and popping in uninvited to snap pictures of the progress (and, let’s be honest, photographic proof of Boyfriend using power tools). The sheetrock went up Sunday morning, and then there was lots of vacuuming.

Next weekend I think we’re installing flooring in the bedroom portion; Boyfriend has obliged my constant obsession of and begging for white floors and agreed to go with this laminate (we can’t use real wood since it’s below ground and being installed on top of concrete). Sometime this week we’ll paint the doors white. We still have to install molding, spackle and sand all the holes in the walls and sheetrock, pick flooring for the den area, paint both rooms, etc etc etc. It’s not going to be an overnight process, but frankly I’m stunned they got as much accomplished in one weekend as they did.

How was your weekend? I’m home today with a stomach bug (lame).

  1. Blimey that’s some hard work those men folk did on your behalf.
Trust you to buy French doors.
It looks great, so much fun once you’ve got the building work out of the way. Can’t wait to see more! xx

  2. Oh dear. Sorry you’re feeling crummy. And I know you hate staying home sick. But HOLY MOLY those guys got a lot done this weekend. I’m totally impressed. TOTALLY. Don’t projects like that take a million more trips to Home Depot than you’re anticipating? Lordy. I think you’ll be happy with the laminate…it’s really durable. And we did tundra in our condo in California and were really happy with it.

I do think you had the most important job. Because how are they going to get it all done without you to inspire them from all your HGTV watching?

  3. Your men folk didn’t mess about did they?! brilliant! I’m so excited and intrigued by your white laminate flooring, I’ve never seen it that white before. So where is the column? It looks to have disappeared.

I must confess that I love the vaccuming bit of any renovation, I find it very satisfying.

    Bring on phase 2…

    Get well soon love x

  4. Blah, feel better Erin. And yes the progress on the room is pretty amazing. You’ve got some talented people in your life. Send them on over here and I’ll put them to work!

  5. Oh wow! Lots of progress! Love the french doors and I can already imagine the white floor. When I see what you can accomplish in a weekend I want to kick start our bathroom renovation but that won’t happen until the fall. Feel better! xx

  6. I can not wait to see the progress on this! I’m totally impressed on how much Jeff and his dad accomplished.

  8. Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. At least you get to stay home, relax, and watch more home shows for inspiration. ;) Your crew got so much done! That’s amazing. I’m so bad though, I already want to see the final product. Patience, young Jedi. I think that flooring is going to work out just fine and the French doors are a beautiful touch. Get some rest…xo

  9. It looks so so so so so so great! I’m so glad I got to see a “before” before! You’ll have to host a girls night when it’s all done!!! :-) FEEL BETTER ASAP!

  10. I didn’t even know Ikea did floor coverings- shows how fast I whizz through there to get to the meatballs and Daims in the shop at the end. Good to know!

  11. Boo! Begone, stomach bug!!! They are truly the worst – I hope you feel better soon! *Hugs*

Oooh, how exciting! I love before-and-afters and I LOVE white flooring but The Hubster’s sooo not into it.
