Keane (!!!)

Saturday started with a trip to IKEA and ended with 2nd row seats to see my favorite band, with a marathon of Gossip Girl in the middle and some delicious Greek food thrown in for good measure. It will go down in history as the best day of all time. If someone had offered me macarons, I might have dropped dead. I am a girl of simple needs.

I called the venue last week to see if cameras were allowed; imagine my potential dismay in finding out my second row seats afforded me a great view if I were to show up without the option to capture the memories, or worse, if I assumed falsely and had my camera confiscated. It turned out to be the latter, kind of. While the lady told me photography wasn’t allowed in the theater, no one would check my bag. I took that as permission to sneak in my little point and shoot and hope for the best. Though there were signs in the lobby that said “No Photography,” I swear almost everyone in the theater had a camera and was using it without any consequences. And you guys, this is my favorite band and the first time I got to see them live, of course I took pictures, too. (Full disclosure: Boyfriend took a lot of these as I was too busy singing my heart out.)

You know when I saw the Eiffel Tower for the first time on our trip and I broke down and cried on the street in Paris? That, um, totally didn’t happen the moment Keane started playing on Saturday night. Or anything.

You know how sometimes bands don’t sound as good live as they do on recordings? This was absolutely not the case with Keane. If anything, they sounded somehow exactly the same as they do on their albums, only BETTER, more full and more incredible. Tom’s voice is amazing, you would almost think he was lip-syncing, as pitch perfect and strong as his voice was. I was less than 5 feet away from the stage, only one row of creepy groupies in front of me (seriously, they follow them around the country and are gross-looking. I thought groupies were supposed to be hot?) and could not believe my luck. They played all of my favorites, including “A Bad Dream,” “Bedshaped,” “Spiralling,” and even “Atlantic,” which I never in a million years expected to sneak into the encore.  It was an amazing night and I left the theater on a total high.

Here are more pictures, the full setlist, and all the merch I bought…

Setlist:

  1. You Are Young
  2. Day Will Come
  3. Everybody’s Changing
  4. Leaving So Soon?
  5. The Starting Line
  6. Nothing in My Way
  7. Neon River
  8. Bend and Break
  9. We Might As Well Be Strangers
  10. Spiralling
  11. A Bad Dream
  12. Perfect Symmetry
  13. Strangeland
  14. On the Road
  15. Disconnected
  16. This is the Last Time
  17. Somewhere Only We Know
  18. Is it Any Wonder?
  19. Bedshaped
  20. Sovereign Light Cafe

Encore:

  1. Sea Fog
  2. Atlantic
  3. Silenced By The Night
  4. Crystal Ball

And because every cultural experience must end in a retail experience for me, I braved the merch line to grab a t-shirt and a pillowcase with the lyrics to “Bedshaped” on it. I got home and ordered a 2nd pillowcase with the lyrics to “A Bad Dream”, as well as a limited edition (of 10) silk screenprint with the date of the show on it. I can’t wait to frame it and hang it in the house.

1. & 2. Pillowcases / 3. Tee / 4. Screenprint

  • Oh dear, I am beyond happy for you. And Greek food?! Good lord, what a day. I absolutely love those pillowcases. I forsee another trip to Ikea for some frames, PRONTO, girl. Really, really lovely photos. Have you come back down to earth yet?

    • Thank you, darling! The Greek food was delicious, when you guys come to visit (which you will, I’ve decreed it so) we should go there. They have an amazing cocktail list, too

I definitely have to hightail it back to IKEA. Like I ever need an excuse, right? And in answer to your question, NOPE, still floating on Cloud 9. I listened to them on my iPod on my commute this morning and was grinning from ear to ear. I’m lame.

  • Five foot from the stage? That’s like the exact height of lead singer!

Seriously, I’m glad you had such a great time and got to see someone you love so much. I totally can’t believe you just stitched up J about taking the photos. Guantanemo Bay for him!

I’m not sure what I think about the pillow cases, a bit weird pehaps? I don’t know about the US but over here gigs are sooo commercial.

Bet you’ve been humming those tunes all day! x

    • Hahahah hey! Leave Tom alone! He is a perfect angel with gorgeous hands (seriously, they’re beyond fascinating for some reason. He’s got piano-player-fingers) and an even more gorgeous voice. And he’s not short! I’m chuckling though.

J had a ton of fun! He was happy to play photographer and then whenever a song came on that he recognized he’d turn to me and excitedly yell, “I KNOW THIS SONG!” Adorbs. xo

      • I thought he had big fat hairy hobbit hands? (Tom, not Jeff).
        That’s so cute of J :)

        • Hahah NO! His hands are all long and lean. I sound like a total creeper but they’re actually pretty sexy. If it’s possible to have sexy hands.

  • Annie is so funny, I’ve got visions of a hobbit every time you talk about Keane, Erin!!! I’m glad you had a fab time, and what a fantastic position, right on the stage there, you could see up his nostrils :-)

I can see you now, bobbing around and singing your little heart out. Too right on the photography front, you (or J) have to play the game, I’d be bending the rules too for such brilliant photos. Although I cannot remember ever getting so close to my musical idol at a concert. 6 rows back at a Barry Manilow concert was the closest (I kid you not). Pillowcase memorabilia, and limited editions too!!!? that’s a new one on me. They’ve got this fan thing well sussed. Can I ask, If they had toilet paper, would u have bought that too? Just pulling your leg x

I think if Macarons had been involved in any way, the tears would have defo flowed, love ya! x

    • No! Don’t let Annie convince you he is a hobbit! Hahah, drats. We were so incredibly close, though. For reference, here’s a screencap from this video of them performing on Saturday night (and yeah, J is totally taking a picture at the time! “No Photography” my bum!)

6 rows back for Barry Manilow is nothing to sneeze at, my dear! Did you get photos then? I misread your comment at first and thought you were telling me that there really was Keane toilet paper and I actually got excited, so I think that answers your question :)

      love you, sweetness! xo

      • That’s AWESOME! I can’t believe you have that! For some random reason it’s making me think of the New Year party tv show on friends where they all had to dance. Remember?

It’s also awesome that you have a reader called ‘not that jeff’. Who is this elusive stranger? And come to think of it why does Jeff never comment on your blog? We want Jeff! We want Jeff! We want Jeff!

        • Haha, it’s from this video that I found on youtube the day after the show! Pretty neat. And yes, I totally know exactly which Friends episode you’re talking about, Ross and Monica have their entire choreographed dance routine! Hilarious.

And “Not that Jeff” is one of Boyfriend’s closest friends, also named Jeff (but we all call him by his last name). Real Jeff swears he reads my blog but I have my doubts. Especially because of the lack of commenting ;)

  • Your opening paragraph is so, so funny – truly quintessentially you! :D
My, what a dream day – it must all seem like awakening from a lovely dream today.

Your excitement is always so charmingly infectious and I’m so pleased for you, duckie!

I have Rufus Wainwright’s Rufus, Rufus, Rufus Does Judy, Judy, Judy poster from the concert of the same name even though I didn’t go – good old Ebay, eh? ;)
It’s the only merch I’ve ever bought.

Note to self: Must take it out of its tube and frame it.

    • You are the absolute sweetest thing in the world, Chi! Thank you so much! It is sort of like waking up from a dream, and I’m sure the farther I get from it the more sad I’ll be. Oh well! At least I have pictures to remind me :)

Go Ebay! You HAVE to take that poster out of the tube and frame it and hang it! Right this instant, miss! I did laugh out loud though at your postscript note to yourself. xoxo

  • Oh my I’m jealous! I saw them a few years ago in DC and my hearty was so happy for weeks after. Aren’t they superb, live? I didn’t know of those pillow cases too! I’m so glad you were able to go hear them!

    • They are unbelievable live! It was the best concert I’ve ever been to, hands down. I’m with you on my heart being happy! I don’t want the feeling to fade.

      PS: welcome back, you! xo

  • Holy crap your seats were close you lucky girl!

    • I know! I couldn’t believe it. It pays to be a member of their mailing list and get pre-sale emails, I guess! xo

  • How many fake golf swings did boyfriend take while in the pit?

    • Oh god, thankfully none! He was busy taking pictures, after all ;)

  • i am so unbelievably jealous, you have no idea! glad you got to sneak in your camera :)

    • Thanks, miss!! It was phenomenal. xo

  • Oh boy, that’s just too adorable. Did you list the setlist so you wouldn’t forget? Or for your readers so that we all die of envy??:)

I always wondered who in their right minds buys the merchandise. Now I know!!! No, seriously, I’m really delighted for you. It sounds like this was an experience to remember FOREVER! You know the first time is always best, right?

I love Keane and think Tom is very talented. Schuss Annie!!

I love more that you posted a screenshot. Thank God you didn’t listen to whoever and got your camera with you. Of course everyone takes photos. Good on you, or shall I say J:)

    BTW, great shots boyfriend!

Well, I am happy you had Ikea, Greek Food and Keane all rolled into one… sounds like the perfect day for you kiddo! Good on you and I shall now go and listen to some Keane in honour of your experience xx

    • Thanks Tina! I’m still beaming! And I made sure to include the setlist for a combination of the reasons you provided, though the jealousy factor is surely lost on Annie. I’m happy to have another Keane-lover in my camp to combat her hobbit-talk :) Haha I’m definitely the sort of person merchandise is geared towards. I’m like their ideal consumer!

J was pretty impressed with himself for some of the shots he got. It was like having an assistant with me whose sole job it was to take pictures (once we realized we were allowed to, of course). I’m usually a rule-breaker when it comes to taking photos inside places but I think I was extra nervous because it was such an important night and I didn’t want anything to go wrong. It all worked out though!

I’m listening to Keane, too! Happy I have someone to share it with right now. xoxo

  • I’m impressed with that screen cap of the actual concert you managed to grab! I can totally see you guys. You DID have good seats. I totally understand your excitement…I would probably feel much the same if I went to see Radiohead and I was so close that Thom Yorke was sweating on me from up on the stage. Ok, that’s kind of gross, but you know what I mean.
As if that wasn’t enough excitement, you also squeezed in a trip to Ikea and watched a marathon of Gossip Girl. I hope you’re taking the day off from work today. ;)
Great photos from BF. He’s such a trooper. I think these photos earn him a contributor title to Like Want Need. [smile] Glad you had a great weekend, E!

  • Oh wow you guys were really really close! Looks and sounds like you had a great weekend. Love how in some shots it looks like the singer has a halo ;) They are great live aren’t they? I really enjoyed the two concerts I went to years back…And IKEA always makes me happy and Greek food is delicious. I’d kill for a Moussaka right now…

    • Love love love the silkscreen print! I will look great framed and lucky you for snatching one out of ten!

      • Ah, Nina! I had no idea you’d seen them twice before! So lucky! Knew we had a lot in common ;) They are incredible live, as you well know. Now I need to see them again, and soon!

Isn’t that print awesome?? I will obviously take pictures once it arrives and I hang it up. Yay!
