Color of the Year

Pantone, the uncontested color authority, recently announced the Color of the Year for 2012, their annual color forecast. 2010 gave us Turquoise. 2011 brought us Honeysuckle (which, um, perhaps wasn’t the best prediction as I haven’t seen a single thing, on the runways or off, in that color. Except in my 5 year old niece’s closet). According to Pantone, 2012 will be the year of Tangerine Tango.

You guys, I think I’m having brain failure or something. I spent the better part of 3 hours compiling this post operating under the impression the color name was “Tango Tangerine.” I googled it a million times and did not ONCE realize all the page results and everything I was reading said “Tangerine Tango.” I actually edited the file name of that swatch above because someone had saved it as “Tangerine Tango” and I thought, “ha! what an idiot!” I didn’t even SEE THE NAME on the swatch until just now. So of course then I had to go back and edit everything else to read properly. Is Adult Onset Dyslexia a thing? I think I have it. Personally, I liked “Tango Tangerine” better. It conjured up mental images of citrus fruits dancing happily.

Moving on.

I think Tangerine Tango (oh my god, the impulse to write that in reverse is overwhelming) is really just poppy masquerading under a nom de plume. And poppy has been EVERYWHERE this year. Really, J Crew hit it and quit it already. I think it had its heyday, but what do I know, I can’t even get the freaking name right. If the color overlords at Pantone say Tangerine Tango, you say “yes sir!”

Shoes / Dress / Nail polish / Pouch / Notebook

I’m kind of in love with it. Surprising, given my penchant for all white, Scandinavian everything (exhibits A, B, C, D, etc). It’s like that scene in The Birdcage, when Albert says, “Well, one does want a hint of color.” I can’t see myself making a huge leap towards color, or anything, don’t get nervous.

What do you think of the color of 2012? What color would you have picked?

  • The Psychodelic Sixties called and they want the color back.

    • For the win!

  • What colour have I picked for 2012? Eh? You clearly have too much time on your hands!

It sounds like a fizzy drink. We have orange Tango and that’s almost exactly the same thing.

I’m not convinced, I think it would make me look sickly if I wore any of this! A nice ceramic lamp from Jonathan Adler. That would be good in this colour.

    • Haha, well maybe not a specific color, but like, yellow? red? I didn’t need a full-on Tangerine Tango kind of name, haha.

We have Tang (without the ‘o’) here, and it’s the same thing. Orange fizzy drink. And it’s interesting you would mention the Jonathan Adler lamp, because I ALMOST included this! Great minds clearly think alike.

  • Well, my color pick for 2012 would have been Black, but they obviously didn’t consult with me. Ok, for a real color, always crimson red. I must say, I am feeling the tangerine, especially since you created that lovely round up of examples. Sold.

    • I’m with you on black, or better yet, gray. Crimson red is a good one, though. Classic, never goes out of style!

  • Love the colour for interiors, not so much as an outfit (as my hair is also kinda Tangerine Tango / Tango Tangerine – I agree with you on the name!) – could maybe pull off the nail varnish…

Love your collection of goodies though, am wishing I could invest in some tangerine for the wardrobe!

    • You have a really cool hair color, then! I’m jealous!
